SUMMARY:Opening Lecture - 14th Brunel International Lecture
DESCRIPTION:ICE\, together with the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI)\, invite you to the opening lecture of our 14th Brunel International Lecture series. Building on previous series\, resilience and sustainability in infrastructure development will remain the main theme of the 2022-24 programme. \nThe individual lectures will focus on: \n\nChallenges\nOpportunities\nEngineering solutions and;\nBest practice examples specific to each region.\n\nThe opening lecture in London will provide a global perspective\, with a special focus on resilient cities\, and the importance of climate equity and support for cities in emerging economies. \nThe wider series will shine a spotlight on equitable\, sustainable\, and resilient infrastructure challenges around the world and showcase what engineers globally are doing to help address that challenge. \nMitigation and adaptation efforts are both necessary for tackling climate change impacts\, however the latter is often overshadowed by the former. It is important to tackle climate change impacts that are felt now\, whilst preparing for the future with resilient infrastructure. \nThe lectures will provide a platform for dialogue with high-profile leaders across the globe\, while focusing on practical engineering issues in tackling climate change at the local level. \nThe opening lecture will feature a keynote address (speaker to be announced soon)\, and an interactive panel discussion moderated by ICE President Ed McCann. The expert line-up includes: \n\nDr Mark Pelling\, Professor of Risk and Disaster Reduction at UCL\nDr Vicky Hutchinson\, Practice Director\, Environment for UK & Europe at Atkins Global.\n\nSave the date: Join us for the next leg of the Brunel International Lecture Series: Africa – 17 November 2022

SUMMARY:Vernon Harcourt Lecture - 2022 Flood risk management - a just transition to a climate resilient future
DESCRIPTION:Join us at this year’s Vernon Harcourt lecture\, which will be delivered by Sally Sudworth\, global head of sustainability and climate change at Mott MacDonald. \nAs it stands\, entire economies still revolve around fossil fuels\, with people around the world relying on them for not just their livelihoods but also their way of life. Making the switch to a sustainable way of living won’t happen overnight\, but green infrastructure can play a huge part in creating a cleaner\, greener\, healthier world. \nAs we look forward to COP27 for climate and COP15 for biodiversity\, the debate about whether COP26 was a success continues. We\, as engineers\, are a community of professionals that is uniquely placed to do something positive. This is as exciting and rewarding as it is demanding. \nWe must safeguard the globe’s precious resources\, creating balanced outcomes against the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We have a duty to ensure\, to the best of our ability\, that the infrastructure we deliver for our clients will be resilient to the impacts of climate change from wildfires\, drought\, extremes of temperature (freezing conditions to heat domes) to flooding. But resilience is just part of it\, we also have need to factor in carbon reduction\, making a conscious effort to reduce the amount we are locking in\, both in construction and operation. \nAre we doing enough? Come along\, join the discussion in person\, and better understand your role in making a difference.
