SUMMARY:Adapting to change using blue-green infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Members £45.00 + VAT Non-Members £95.00 + VAT \nThe UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) latest report ‘Climate Change 2021 The Physical Science Basis’ signalled ‘code red for humanity’ and states that ‘Climate change is already affecting every inhabited region across the globe …’. \nWe know that mitigation of climate change through reducing carbon emissions is urgent. More urgency also needs to be placed on adaptation in order to protect our communities and habitats from the impacts already occurring\, while we strive toward net zero. This was the key message of The Climate Change Committee’s (CCC) report ‘Progress in adapting to climate change: 2021 Report to Parliament’ which noted that ‘…additional changes in the UK’s climate to 2050 are largely insensitive to the pathway of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over coming decades’ and that ‘The gap between future levels of risk and planned adaptation has widened in the last 5 years’. Blue-green infrastructure was credited as being a key adaptation measure to generate a range of benefits both for human health and wildlife. \nOur 2020 conference ‘Delivering and monitoring blue-green infrastructure’ emphasised the need to mainstream the implementation of blue-green infrastructure. This year the urgency of this message is never more apparent. The impacts of COVID-19 have demonstrated how major threats can disrupt lives\, and the messages from the IPCC and CCC emphasise the need to act now to be prepared for further change: goal 2 of COP26 is to ‘urgently adapt to protect communities and natural habitats’. \nThis CIRIA conference will explore how engagement\, evaluation\, management implementation and connecting blue-green infrastructure can unlock its multiple benefits as we strive to urgently adapt to the impacts of climate change on our communities and habitats.

SUMMARY:Explore Engineering - Winchester Waterways Walk
DESCRIPTION:Winchester\, King Alfred’s capital of Wessex\, is a beautiful cathedral City\, but also has a complicated river system with various interlinked branches of the River Itchen flowing through\, and under the City. \nFollowing serious flooding in 2014 a scheme was built last year to help to manage flooding by control of the river upstream in an and allow flooding in the Nature reserve at Winnall Moors\, a SSSI. \nThe schemes involved creation of a high-risk reservoir in the city centre that is designed not to be an obvious flood defence. \nThe walk will allow you to see the new construction\, but also the nature reserve at Winnall Moors. \nCovid-19 restrictions: we will abide by Government guidance in place at the time of this event or postpone the event to a new date if necessary. Arrangements will be clarified in advance for those people signed up to the event. \nMeet at the Durngate Car-park ( North Walls\, Winchester SO23 8DW) at 15:45 for a 16:00 start and it is about 1 mile around the new works\, but we will also walk around the Nature Reserve and to City Mill\, which as an important part of the scheme making a total of about 4 miles. The scheme was a co-operation between the City Council\, County Council and the Environment Agency. \nThe total length of walk is about 4 miles. The walk is expected to finish about 18:30pm. No specific arrangements have been made for refreshments afterwards\, but there are a variety for pubs and restaurants in the City Centre. \nThis event has been organised by the ICE retired members group\, but all grades of membership\, guests and partners are welcome at this event. If you would like more information about the visit please contact Tim Kermode (tim@tk-coastal.co.uk) Attendance will count towards CPD. \nNumbers will be limited to 20 people so please book through the ICE system. There is no charge for this event.

SUMMARY:The RootSpace Story In Conversation with Dean Bowie. Presented by GreenBlue urban
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\nThey are often asked what is RootSpace and how did it come to market. \nUnsurprising\, it starts with trees. It is difficult to imagine life without them\, they are also complex organisms\, interacting with their surroundings in many ways – the living lungs of the planet. \nThis story (of soil cells) is 20 years young and during this presentation we will share the experiences\, the exciting moments\, the breakthrough events which led to the creation of the most advanced urban tree pit system available. \n  \nLearning outcomes: \n\nLook at the forest floor environment which is where trees do best – healthy uncompacted soil. Compared to the built environment where they are most needed for shade\, water management\, air quality and so many other ecosystem benefits.\nHead back to 1992 when formally known as Greenleaf\, to the present day as innovation continues. Hear an interview with our founder who experienced frustration with high mortality rates of newly planted trees\, who then developed products to aide irrigation and root management to enable tree establishment.\nLook back at successful case studies\, with extracts from clients and designers from across the globe.\n\n\n\nClick here to find out more and register

SUMMARY:Greener workspaces- restoring nature for Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:About the webinar\nThe environmental challenge facing the world has never been greater. Alongside progress towards net zero carbon\, businesses need to find more efficient ways to manage and use resources and to build resilience to the extreme weather brought by climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how we use our workplaces. As a result we need to build back in a way that increases corporate and individual resilience to future global shocks. \nAll employers can create workplaces that maximise green space\, naturally manage rain and surface water and work with nature. During this webinar we will provide an introduction for businesses on: \n\nwhat nature-based solutions and SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) are and the value they can provide for your business from reduced flood risk and energy savings to enhanced biodiversity and employee and community wellbeing.\nhow to introduce nature-based solutions in the environment around your workplace\, from small-scale changes to transformational projects.\nexamples and case studies of nature-based solutions installations of different scales.\n\nYou may also be interested in Business in the Community’s (BITC) Guide to Greening your Workspace toolkit which introduces some of the ways that businesses can use nature-based solutions to improve their resilience\, enhance their environment and improve biodiversity through the installation or enhancement of green and blue spaces in and around their premises. \nClick here to find out more and register

SUMMARY:Gerald Lacey Lecture 2021
DESCRIPTION:Land and Water Management for Food Security: The Broad Picture\nRecent estimates of food demand\, based on median projections of growth\, call for a 50% increase in the global demand figure. Linearly proportional increases in the allocation of land and water resources towards increased food production are not realistic given the trends in competing uses for these resources. Besides\, our natural resource base is already giving alarm signals for increased exploitation. The pandemic also revealed the vulnerabilities in our food value chains. \nThe speaker will discuss the response options available to the policy makers\, based on the most recent figures about the state of the resources and the trends\, and both the need and the opportunities for cooperation across sectoral and disciplinary boundaries. \nClick here to find out more and register.
