SUMMARY:Beyond the Asset: Catchment system opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by CIWEM Tyne & Humber branch and Stantec\, this first webinar in a two-part series will explore catchment system opportunities\, with the second focusing on solutions. \nCatchment investigation is a significant part of developing water and wastewater solutions. The Government has defined over 100 major water catchments in England and has identified a significant shortfall in the catchment spending required to meet policy objectives. Catchment management represents a new way of working. \nHistorically\, water companies have relied on predictable and visible treatment or engineering solutions. This is because delivering these is in their control. But catchment management schemes are more uncertain. They often rely on partnerships\, new skills and changing the behaviours of individuals and organisations within water catchments\, alongside new ways of predicting and monitoring success. \nIf adopting catchment management approaches enables a company to meet its legal water quality standards at a reduced cost its customers will benefit from lower bills. The environment also benefits from improvements in sustainability and biodiversity. \nBringing together key practitioners in this field from Northumbrian Water\, Promar International and Stantec\, we will discuss some of the key challenges in identifying and investigating catchment system opportunities. These include opportunity mapping\, working with multiple stakeholders\, dealing with fair share concepts and how to evidence the performance of catchment measures. \n  \nFind out more here.

SUMMARY:Urban reforestation as effective climate change mitigation
DESCRIPTION:Wide-ranging presentation covering urban tree planting\, sustainable drainage systems and green wall planting specifically designed to not only help adapt to climate change but to create safer\, cleaner\, and healthier towns and cities for future generations. \nSpecies choice\, best practice planting methods and incorporation of sustainable drainage systems open new possibilities that will enhance our towns and cities\, making them resilient\, future-proofed\, and simply more pleasant. \nUrban biodiversity will also be covered in this session – a matter of concern to many local authorities who desire to re-wild our towns\, bringing in flora and fauna that may have flourished in the past\, but have been reduced by the removal of natural habitat. \nLearning outcomes: \n\nUnderstanding different tree planting methodologies\, and how effective they are\nImportance of retro-fitting SuDS systems which are multi-functional to make urban areas resilient\nAlternative ways to green screen vertical walls\, and the advantages to the built environment\n\nFind out more here.

SUMMARY:The John Mitchell Lecture 2022: Thinking conceptually about groundwater problems
DESCRIPTION:Many excavations and tunnels experience problems and instability caused by uncontrolled groundwater inflows or pressures. Groundwater control measures are used to overcome these problems and create stable and workably dry conditions below groundwater level. \nA key challenge for designers is that the performance of the various techniques is strongly influenced by the hydrogeological conditions at a site. Furthermore\, the available ground investigation data may have gaps or be subject to considerable uncertainty regarding key parameters such as permeability or hydraulic boundary conditions. This means that there are some groundwater problems where analysis involves so many assumptions and uncertainties that the design outcomes are of little practical value. \nThis lecture will discuss how thinking conceptually about groundwater problems can be of great benefit when developing of groundwater control schemes\, and that a robust conceptual model helps reduce the risk of designs being developed using inappropriate techniques. Examples will be given of cases where conceptual understanding of groundwater conditions proved vital in developing practical engineering solutions. \nFind out more here

SUMMARY:Resilience Planning in the Water Industry
DESCRIPTION:A key component of resilience planning is the creation and maintenance of detailed planning and the provision of adequate training to guide those tasked with responding to events that threaten to and sometimes disrupt the key activities that are essential to the operation of any organisation. \nThis short presentation will look at this component from a water industry perspective but many of the topics explored have application across most if not all organisations\, especially as the challenges of the current climate emergency deepen. \n

SUMMARY:LIEM: Natural Flood Management - an urban perspective
DESCRIPTION:Natural Flood Management (NFM) involves slowing the flow of water from rural headwater streams to reduce flood risk in downstream urban areas. But how natural is ‘natural’ flood management’ and is there a place for it in urban green spaces? This talk will explore the scientific basis behind NFM and highlight some of the challenges of introducing ’natural’ to the urban water environment\, with reference to recent case studies. The talk should be of interested to landscape architects\, ecologists and flood risk management professionals involved in the management of urban green spaces.

SUMMARY:Greening London's Flood Risk Management Assets\, Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Delivering flood risk management assets\, like all other infrastructure\, is going through a paradigm shift to ensure provision intrinsically supports the sustainability agenda – net zero\, circular economy\, net gain and social value. This talk looks\, via the lens of activity on the Thames\, at how current practice is changing its shape to deliver sustainably. From: \n\nstrategy level approaches of using asset management\, which echoes the premise of the architecture of the built environment – ‘the greenest building [flood risk management asset] is the one you already have’\nthrough\, programme alignment that delivers to net zero and circular economy ambitions and targets\, and\nand operational techniques such as Integrated Green Grey Infrastructure\, and Estuary Edges approaches that deliver to net gain\, and that are increasingly enabling social value benefits.

SUMMARY:ICE - Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) in Yorkshire\, online
DESCRIPTION:Landscape architects 2B Landscape Consultancy Ltd have extensive experience spanning over 30 years in Landscape Design\, Assessment and Visualisation\, with a special interest in Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). \nSuDS design teams will be familiar with the four pillars of SuDS; quantity\, quality\, amenity and biodiversity\, but often find their clients asking – “but isn’t it going to cost more?” \nWhen 2B was asked to provide a planting plan for an already designed drainage system\, they worked with the quantity surveyor to demonstrate that a landscape-based SuDS scheme would have saved 1.5% on the construction budget\, had landscape architects been involved in time. \nJoin us for this knowledge sharing event to find out how early engagement with landscape architects on drainage design can reduce scheme costs and deliver on the four pillars of SuDS. \nThe webinar will explore how reducing costs can be achieved alongside the four pillars of SuDS by: \nReducing the need for underground tanks and pipework.\nUsing site earthworks to construct the landscaped SuDS.\nAvoiding costs associated with connections by using natural drainage pathways.\nFollowing a recap on good SuDS principles generally\, 2B will walk through the proposed landscaped SuDS Design for the University of Hull student accommodation case study\, including the detail of where cost savings were identified compared to conventional drainage design. \nYorkshire Water will provide a brief overview of the 2020 Sewerage Sector Guidance as it relates to adoptable SuDS\, and detail the types of landscaped SuDS that can be presented for adoption locally.

SUMMARY:Urban Drainage Group Annual Conference & Expo 2021
DESCRIPTION:CIWEM’s Urban Drainage Group continues its long tradition of hosting its annual conference in the autumn as the culmination of a year of highly regarded virtual events across the whole industry\, attracting speakers and delegates both nationally and internationally. \nWith the upcoming COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow this Autumn and the continuing development of Drainage and Wastewater Management Plans in mind\, our theme centres around our response to quantifying and more importantly managing Climate Change and adapting our solutions to be both resilient and meet Net Zero challenges related to urban drainage management. \nThis autumn we are again hosting a virtual technical conference\, building on the success of last year and our attendance at the recent CIWEM Flood & Coast event\, we will be providing an experience as closely matched to our traditional physical event as possible. \nWe recognise how our community values getting together and sharing its ideas on best practice\, innovation and partnership working in urban drainage and will be delivering a packed agenda of CPD-accredited panel sessions\, technical papers\, panel discussion\, and\, returning this year\, workshops. In addition\, we will be hosting a virtual exhibition to enable our sponsors and delegates to interact and share the experience. \nWe are pleased to announce that this year’s conference will take place on the Hopin platform. The platform is designed to feel like an in-person event — not only will delegates be able to interact with speakers through the live Q&A and sessions but with fellow delegates\, too. As a delegate you will be able to take part in group work\, share your views through the chat\, take part in speed-networking and arrange meetings with fellow delegates. We hope you will enjoy this new platform but most importantly\, we hope you enjoy the content. \nThe conference will include the award of the WaPUG Prize 2021.

SUMMARY:Adapting to change using blue-green infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Members £45.00 + VAT Non-Members £95.00 + VAT \nThe UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) latest report ‘Climate Change 2021 The Physical Science Basis’ signalled ‘code red for humanity’ and states that ‘Climate change is already affecting every inhabited region across the globe …’. \nWe know that mitigation of climate change through reducing carbon emissions is urgent. More urgency also needs to be placed on adaptation in order to protect our communities and habitats from the impacts already occurring\, while we strive toward net zero. This was the key message of The Climate Change Committee’s (CCC) report ‘Progress in adapting to climate change: 2021 Report to Parliament’ which noted that ‘…additional changes in the UK’s climate to 2050 are largely insensitive to the pathway of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over coming decades’ and that ‘The gap between future levels of risk and planned adaptation has widened in the last 5 years’. Blue-green infrastructure was credited as being a key adaptation measure to generate a range of benefits both for human health and wildlife. \nOur 2020 conference ‘Delivering and monitoring blue-green infrastructure’ emphasised the need to mainstream the implementation of blue-green infrastructure. This year the urgency of this message is never more apparent. The impacts of COVID-19 have demonstrated how major threats can disrupt lives\, and the messages from the IPCC and CCC emphasise the need to act now to be prepared for further change: goal 2 of COP26 is to ‘urgently adapt to protect communities and natural habitats’. \nThis CIRIA conference will explore how engagement\, evaluation\, management implementation and connecting blue-green infrastructure can unlock its multiple benefits as we strive to urgently adapt to the impacts of climate change on our communities and habitats.

SUMMARY:Environment Agency : Achieving net zero webinar
DESCRIPTION:As an operator and a regulator\, the Environment Agency has a leading role in helping the country get to net zero by 2050\, a commitment the UK government set out in law in 2019. The Environment Agency\, including their supply chain has set a challenging target of reaching net zero by 2030\, as outlined in their Reaching Net Zero Strategy published earlier this year. \nThis event will showcase the latest thinking from the Environment Agency on making this ambition a reality. The session will be led by senior individuals within the organisation\, discussing the roadmap to net zero\, some of the latest innovations helping to accelerate the transition to low carbon construction and operations and an example of delivery in practice from a major project recently completed on the Kent coastline.
