DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by CIWEM Tyne & Humber branch and Stantec\, this first webinar in a two-part series will explore catchment system opportunities\, with the second focusing on solutions. \nCatchment investigation is a significant part of developing water and wastewater solutions. The Government has defined over 100 major water catchments in England and has identified a significant shortfall in the catchment spending required to meet policy objectives. Catchment management represents a new way of working. \nHistorically\, water companies have relied on predictable and visible treatment or engineering solutions. This is because delivering these is in their control. But catchment management schemes are more uncertain. They often rely on partnerships\, new skills and changing the behaviours of individuals and organisations within water catchments\, alongside new ways of predicting and monitoring success. \nIf adopting catchment management approaches enables a company to meet its legal water quality standards at a reduced cost its customers will benefit from lower bills. The environment also benefits from improvements in sustainability and biodiversity. \nBringing together key practitioners in this field from Northumbrian Water\, Promar International and Stantec\, we will discuss some of the key challenges in identifying and investigating catchment system opportunities. DESCRIPTION:Join us at this year’s Vernon Harcourt lecture\, which will be delivered by Sally Sudworth\, global head of sustainability and climate change at Mott MacDonald. \nAs it stands\, entire economies still revolve around fossil fuels\, with people around the world relying on them for not just their livelihoods but also their way of life. Making the switch to a sustainable way of living won’t happen overnight\, but green infrastructure can play a huge part in creating a cleaner\, greener\, healthier world. \nAs we look forward to COP27 for climate and COP15 for biodiversity\, the debate about whether COP26 was a success continues. We\, as engineers\, are a community of professionals that is uniquely placed to do something positive. This is as exciting and rewarding as it is demanding. \nWe must safeguard the globe’s precious resources\, creating balanced outcomes against the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We have a duty to ensure\, to the best of our ability\, that the infrastructure we deliver for our clients will be resilient to the impacts of climate change from wildfires\, drought\, extremes of temperature (freezing conditions to heat domes) to flooding. But resilience is just part of it\, we also have need to factor in carbon reduction\, making a conscious effort to reduce the amount we are locking in\, both in construction and operation. \nAre we doing enough? SUMMARY:Engineering Dynamism back into Rivers Webinar
DESCRIPTION:We are currently in a flood rich period in the UK and traditionally attention is focussed on direct protection to communities at risk. More recently it has been realised that opportunities to ameliorate flood impact also exist outside of at-risk towns and cities. \nThese forms of Natural Flood Management have received considerable attention of late and this talk will review the recent approaches to better managing our rivers and their floodplains to control flood peaks and importantly to restore the natural sediment balance in river systems that sees gravels stored in the catchments above flood risk areas rather than accumulating in urban flood relief schemes as it does at present. \nWe present data from several systems in the North of England where\, through the reestablishment of natural river and floodplain processes\, large volumes of sediment are now being locked up across floodplain areas reducing the flux of material heading downstream. We also discuss the added value that these types of schemes bring in terms of biodiversity gains and climate change mitigation through the rejuvenation of functional wetlands and consequent carbon capture.

SUMMARY:River Water Quality &  Storm Overflows - Systems approach to maximise improvement
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by CIWEM\nEvent description\nSewage pollution from storm overflows in sewers has become a headline environmental and social water quality issue. A wide range of factors influence how frequently they spill. And a wide range of actions are needed to reduce that frequency. By looking beyond the obvious\, we can maximise the benefits of actions and make them as cost-effective to deliver as possible. \nAs Defra is consulting on its Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan\, CIWEM is launching the findings of stakeholder research and systems mapping to highlight where action should be taken to get the best outcomes in reducing pollution from storm overflows. \nThis webinar will present why we need to look beyond just water companies to achieve lasting improvements on sewage pollution and set out the findings and recommendations of CIWEM’s work. This consulted a wide range of water professionals\, NGOs and local and national government\, agencies and regulators and involved systems-thinking and mapping specialists from Imperial College London to understand the system of pressures on sewerage infrastructure. \nThe findings set out where additional action – tapping into related areas of activity\, investment and policy – can supplement the measures set out by Government to tackle the issue\, and get more bang for our buck. \nWith speakers from CIWEM\, Imperial College London\, The Rivers Trust and Stantec this 90-minute event will explore what we need to do and who needs to act\, how that can give us not just cleaner\, healthier rivers but greener\, more climate resilient places to live\, how long it might realistically take and how much it might cost. \n  \nPart of the CIWEM Pollution digital series.

It is primarily concerned with the ‘where?’ and ‘how?’ of NFM delivery\, rather than ‘why?’ It aims to provide confidence in NFM delivery and ensure the best outcomes\, recognising that innovation in this area is constantly emerging. \nThe manual is intended for use in the UK and is tailored to the geographical settings and conditions of the country\, although it draws on advice and case studies from elsewhere and could be of assistance for overseas projects. \nThe manual covers NFM measures to reduce the risk of flooding from surface water and rivers. It does not include coastal NFM to reduce the risk of tidal or coastal flooding\, guidance for which is available elsewhere. \nDetailed technical advice is given on four key measures which are considered challenging to deliver and with less detailed information already available. SUMMARY:Hydrometic Monitoring for the EA Flood Warning Expansion Project
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the CIWEM Rivers & Coastal Group\nEvent description\nThe Environment Agency’s Flood Warning Expansion Project (FWEP) aims to deliver flood warnings to all properties at high risk of fluvial flooding in England. To achieve this\, the FWEP monitoring team has significantly increased the capability of the Environment Agency to warn and inform the public of flooding. As part of this programme there have been nearly 200 hydrometric monitoring sites installed in 18 months to help provide flood warnings to almost ten thousand properties at high risk of flooding. \nMembers of the FWEP project team will present how they devised a low cost\, small footprint\, low carbon\, adaptable\, risk reduced solution that will potentially change the future of hydrometric monitoring within the Environment Agency. \nThis webinar is open to all and no previous hydrometric or flood warning knowledge is required to attend this presentation. \n  \n  \nPart of the CIWEM Flood Resilience digital series.

DESCRIPTION:Since 2019\, the IGNITION project has explored how Greater Manchester can accelerate the delivery of urban nature-based solutions to build a climate resilient city-region. Please register for the ‘seminar recording’ to be notified when this is available. \nBackground\nDrainage/flood protection engineers need to be able to quantify how SuDS devices respond to rainfall events – including the extreme events that are responsible for flooding – to effectively use SuDS for stormwater management purposes. \nBiofilters (also known as raingardens) manage runoff from catchments typically ten times larger than their own plan area and provide filtration of pollutants associated with road runoff.ly \nThe ’Urban Green DaMS’ project collected data from a combination of full-scale test beds (lysimeters) at Newcastle University and column tests at The University of Sheffield. The data will help understand and quantify the influence of design parameters (growing media composition\, planting selection and outlet control configuration) on the rainfall retention (ET rates) and runoff detention performance (K values and outlet controls) of lined biofilter systems. \nFindings of the three-year EPSRC-funded collaborative research project will be summarised by the researchers and use of the data within modelling for rainwater management will be discussed. \nSuDS practitioners will talk about the impact of this work on design\, implementation\, regulatory targets\, and guidance including incorporation into the forthcoming update of CIRIA’s The SuDS Manual (C753F).
