SUMMARY:Sustainable Water Management Focus Group
DESCRIPTION:This Focus Group has been formed to provide manufacturers/suppliers with a route through which to monitor and lobby in relation to\, the development of SUDS Regulations and to promote engineered SUDS components within the overall design and application of SUDS. \nThe Focus Group works with the environmental regulators to develop and publish guidance information and to disseminate the information to planners\, developers\, and regulators.

SUMMARY:Learning from the Natural Flood Management Programme
DESCRIPTION:Although there had been a handful of small\, innovative NFM projects in the past\, the UK government’s natural flood management programme was introduced to understand more fully how nature-based solutions can be used at a large scale as part of the toolbox to reduce flood risk and improve habitats. \nThis webinar will provide an overview of the programme and the next steps in the journey to mainstreaming nature-based solutions. It will cover the different terminology around natural flood management\, the interventions used\, how the programme was managed\, as well as the lessons learnt and how these can be incorporated into future projects. \nThis talk is open to all\, particularly those with an interest in flood and coastal risk management. \nPart of the CIWEM Flood Resilience digital series.

SUMMARY:Vernon Harcourt Lecture - 2022 Flood risk management - a just transition to a climate resilient future
DESCRIPTION:Join us at this year’s Vernon Harcourt lecture\, which will be delivered by Sally Sudworth\, global head of sustainability and climate change at Mott MacDonald. \nAs it stands\, entire economies still revolve around fossil fuels\, with people around the world relying on them for not just their livelihoods but also their way of life. Making the switch to a sustainable way of living won’t happen overnight\, but green infrastructure can play a huge part in creating a cleaner\, greener\, healthier world. \nAs we look forward to COP27 for climate and COP15 for biodiversity\, the debate about whether COP26 was a success continues. We\, as engineers\, are a community of professionals that is uniquely placed to do something positive. This is as exciting and rewarding as it is demanding. \nWe must safeguard the globe’s precious resources\, creating balanced outcomes against the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We have a duty to ensure\, to the best of our ability\, that the infrastructure we deliver for our clients will be resilient to the impacts of climate change from wildfires\, drought\, extremes of temperature (freezing conditions to heat domes) to flooding. But resilience is just part of it\, we also have need to factor in carbon reduction\, making a conscious effort to reduce the amount we are locking in\, both in construction and operation. \nAre we doing enough? Come along\, join the discussion in person\, and better understand your role in making a difference.

SUMMARY:Urban Drainage Group Training Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:How do we design urban drainage to be resilient and manage the risk of exceedance? \nThis year’s CIWEM UDG training day will be held over two days\, 16-17 March. The topic we will be covering is exceedance: as engineers\, environmentalists\, planners and policy makers\, how do we design and adapt our assets to cope with extremes in weather? \nThis challenge is one that needs to tackled in collaboration\, with risk management authorities working with other organisations and stakeholders. It potentially involves those directly impacted\, so that they can help to protect themselves. \nOur packed programme will include CPD-accredited interactive sessions\, technical paper presentations\, panel discussions\, practical sessions and speed networking. \nSpaces are limited and are available on a first come\, first serve basis. Registration will close at midnight on 10th March. \nThe cost to attend both days is £60\, sponsorship packages are available at £900 (including local taxes\, where applicable). \nFor sponsorship enquiries\, please email ciwemevents@syonmedia.com \nFor group bookings\, please email events@ciwem.org
