SUMMARY:Explore Engineering - Winchester Waterways Walk
DESCRIPTION:Winchester\, King Alfred’s capital of Wessex\, is a beautiful cathedral City\, but also has a complicated river system with various interlinked branches of the River Itchen flowing through\, and under the City. \nFollowing serious flooding in 2014 a scheme was built last year to help to manage flooding by control of the river upstream in an and allow flooding in the Nature reserve at Winnall Moors\, a SSSI. \nThe schemes involved creation of a high-risk reservoir in the city centre that is designed not to be an obvious flood defence. \nThe walk will allow you to see the new construction\, but also the nature reserve at Winnall Moors. \nCovid-19 restrictions: we will abide by Government guidance in place at the time of this event or postpone the event to a new date if necessary. Arrangements will be clarified in advance for those people signed up to the event. \nMeet at the Durngate Car-park ( North Walls\, Winchester SO23 8DW) at 15:45 for a 16:00 start and it is about 1 mile around the new works\, but we will also walk around the Nature Reserve and to City Mill\, which as an important part of the scheme making a total of about 4 miles. The scheme was a co-operation between the City Council\, County Council and the Environment Agency. \nThe total length of walk is about 4 miles. The walk is expected to finish about 18:30pm. No specific arrangements have been made for refreshments afterwards\, but there are a variety for pubs and restaurants in the City Centre. \nThis event has been organised by the ICE retired members group\, but all grades of membership\, guests and partners are welcome at this event. If you would like more information about the visit please contact Tim Kermode (tim@tk-coastal.co.uk) Attendance will count towards CPD. \nNumbers will be limited to 20 people so please book through the ICE system. There is no charge for this event.

DESCRIPTION:As an operator and a regulator\, the Environment Agency has a leading role in helping the country get to net zero by 2050\, a commitment the UK government set out in law in 2019. The Environment Agency\, including their supply chain has set a challenging target of reaching net zero by 2030\, as outlined in their Reaching Net Zero Strategy published earlier this year. \nThis event will showcase the latest thinking from the Environment Agency on making this ambition a reality. SUMMARY:ICE - Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) in Yorkshire\, online
DESCRIPTION:Landscape architects 2B Landscape Consultancy Ltd have extensive experience spanning over 30 years in Landscape Design\, Assessment and Visualisation\, with a special interest in Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). \nSuDS design teams will be familiar with the four pillars of SuDS; quantity\, quality\, amenity and biodiversity\, but often find their clients asking – “but isn’t it going to cost more?” \nWhen 2B was asked to provide a planting plan for an already designed drainage system\, they worked with the quantity surveyor to demonstrate that a landscape-based SuDS scheme would have saved 1.5% on the construction budget\, had landscape architects been involved in time. \nJoin us for this knowledge sharing event to find out how early engagement with landscape architects on drainage design can reduce scheme costs and deliver on the four pillars of SuDS. \nThe webinar will explore how reducing costs can be achieved alongside the four pillars of SuDS by: \nReducing the need for underground tanks and pipework.\nUsing site earthworks to construct the landscaped SuDS.\nAvoiding costs associated with connections by using natural drainage pathways.\nFollowing a recap on good SuDS principles generally\, 2B will walk through the proposed landscaped SuDS Design for the University of Hull student accommodation case study\, including the detail of where cost savings were identified compared to conventional drainage design. \nYorkshire Water will provide a brief overview of the 2020 Sewerage Sector Guidance as it relates to adoptable SuDS\, and detail the types of landscaped SuDS that can be presented for adoption locally.

SUMMARY:Vernon Harcourt Lecture - 2022 Flood risk management - a just transition to a climate resilient future
DESCRIPTION:Join us at this year’s Vernon Harcourt lecture\, which will be delivered by Sally Sudworth\, global head of sustainability and climate change at Mott MacDonald. \nAs it stands\, entire economies still revolve around fossil fuels\, with people around the world relying on them for not just their livelihoods but also their way of life. Making the switch to a sustainable way of living won’t happen overnight\, but green infrastructure can play a huge part in creating a cleaner\, greener\, healthier world. \nAs we look forward to COP27 for climate and COP15 for biodiversity\, the debate about whether COP26 was a success continues. We\, as engineers\, are a community of professionals that is uniquely placed to do something positive. This is as exciting and rewarding as it is demanding. \nWe must safeguard the globe’s precious resources\, creating balanced outcomes against the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We have a duty to ensure\, to the best of our ability\, that the infrastructure we deliver for our clients will be resilient to the impacts of climate change from wildfires\, drought\, extremes of temperature (freezing conditions to heat domes) to flooding. But resilience is just part of it\, we also have need to factor in carbon reduction\, making a conscious effort to reduce the amount we are locking in\, both in construction and operation. \nAre we doing enough? DESCRIPTION:How do we design urban drainage to be resilient and manage the risk of exceedance? \nThis year’s CIWEM UDG training day will be held over two days\, 16-17 March. SUMMARY:River Water Quality &  Storm Overflows - Systems approach to maximise improvement
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by CIWEM\nEvent description\nSewage pollution from storm overflows in sewers has become a headline environmental and social water quality issue. A wide range of factors influence how frequently they spill. And a wide range of actions are needed to reduce that frequency. By looking beyond the obvious\, we can maximise the benefits of actions and make them as cost-effective to deliver as possible. \nAs Defra is consulting on its Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan\, CIWEM is launching the findings of stakeholder research and systems mapping to highlight where action should be taken to get the best outcomes in reducing pollution from storm overflows. \nThis webinar will present why we need to look beyond just water companies to achieve lasting improvements on sewage pollution and set out the findings and recommendations of CIWEM’s work. This consulted a wide range of water professionals\, NGOs and local and national government\, agencies and regulators and involved systems-thinking and mapping specialists from Imperial College London to understand the system of pressures on sewerage infrastructure. \nThe findings set out where additional action – tapping into related areas of activity\, investment and policy – can supplement the measures set out by Government to tackle the issue\, and get more bang for our buck. \nWith speakers from CIWEM\, Imperial College London\, The Rivers Trust and Stantec this 90-minute event will explore what we need to do and who needs to act\, how that can give us not just cleaner\, healthier rivers but greener\, more climate resilient places to live\, how long it might realistically take and how much it might cost. \n  \nPart of the CIWEM Pollution digital series.

DESCRIPTION:This free event\, hosted by The University of Sheffield and Newcastle University\, will provide insight into the outcomes and impacts of a three-year collaborative research project (Urban Green DaMS) to improve design parameters for biofilters/raingardens.\n\nLimited places to in-person event\nPlaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come\, first-served basis. Please register for the ‘seminar recording’ to be notified when this is available. \nBackground\nDrainage/flood protection engineers need to be able to quantify how SuDS devices respond to rainfall events – including the extreme events that are responsible for flooding – to effectively use SuDS for stormwater management purposes. \nBiofilters (also known as raingardens) manage runoff from catchments typically ten times larger than their own plan area and provide filtration of pollutants associated with road runoff.ly \nThe ’Urban Green DaMS’ project collected data from a combination of full-scale test beds (lysimeters) at Newcastle University and column tests at The University of Sheffield. The data will help understand and quantify the influence of design parameters (growing media composition\, planting selection and outlet control configuration) on the rainfall retention (ET rates) and runoff detention performance (K values and outlet controls) of lined biofilter systems. \nFindings of the three-year EPSRC-funded collaborative research project will be summarised by the researchers and use of the data within modelling for rainwater management will be discussed. \nSuDS practitioners will talk about the impact of this work on design\, implementation\, regulatory targets\, and guidance including incorporation into the forthcoming update of CIRIA’s The SuDS Manual (C753F).
