SUMMARY:Bioretention Research & Practise - Outcomes & impacts of 3 year collaboration research project (Urban Green DaMS)
DESCRIPTION:This free event\, hosted by The University of Sheffield and Newcastle University\, will provide insight into the outcomes and impacts of a three-year collaborative research project (Urban Green DaMS) to improve design parameters for biofilters/raingardens.\n\nLimited places to in-person event\nPlaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come\, first-served basis. If you are unable to register online\, please email Susan Richards to be added to the wait list. We reserve the right to limit the number of registrations per company. The session will be recorded and made available to anyone unable to attend in person. Please register for the ‘seminar recording’ to be notified when this is available. \nBackground\nDrainage/flood protection engineers need to be able to quantify how SuDS devices respond to rainfall events – including the extreme events that are responsible for flooding – to effectively use SuDS for stormwater management purposes. \nBiofilters (also known as raingardens) manage runoff from catchments typically ten times larger than their own plan area and provide filtration of pollutants associated with road runoff.ly \nThe ’Urban Green DaMS’ project collected data from a combination of full-scale test beds (lysimeters) at Newcastle University and column tests at The University of Sheffield. The data will help understand and quantify the influence of design parameters (growing media composition\, planting selection and outlet control configuration) on the rainfall retention (ET rates) and runoff detention performance (K values and outlet controls) of lined biofilter systems. \nFindings of the three-year EPSRC-funded collaborative research project will be summarised by the researchers and use of the data within modelling for rainwater management will be discussed. \nSuDS practitioners will talk about the impact of this work on design\, implementation\, regulatory targets\, and guidance including incorporation into the forthcoming update of CIRIA’s The SuDS Manual (C753F). They will also provide an overview of important ongoing retrofit SuDS projects. \nSponsorship opportunities\nFor more information about sponsorship opportunities\, please contact Louise Walker. \nWhy attend \n\nLearn how different types of vegetation and outlet controls impact surface water retention and detention in raingardens.\nUnderstand the impact of evapotranspiration and hydraulic conductivity on raingarden performance.\nDiscover how new data on raingarden performance can be included in the most commonly used modelling tools.\nParticipate in discussions on appropriate regulatory targets for surface water management.\nHear about the planned approach to update to The SuDS Manual (C753F) and incorporate knowledge from the latest research and practice..\nGain insight into the evolution of retrofit SuDS from practitioners involved in large-scale projects.\nEarn valuable CPD.\n\nWho should attend\nLead Local Flood Authorities\, Local authority planners\, Local authority highways teams\, Regeneration and redevelopment specialists\, Urban designers\, Engineering consultants\, Landscape architects\, Sewerage undertakers\, Environmental regulators\, Researchers\, SuDS designers\, Environmental organisations\, susdrain partners and supporters. \nWhen\nMonday 19 September 2022\n12:30 – 18:00 \nProgramme\n12:30 Welcome lunch \n13:30 Welcome and introduction\nProfessor Virginia Stovin\, Professor of Green Infrastructure for\nStormwater Management\, The University of Sheffield \n13:45 Effects of different vegetation and outlet controls on retention and detention\nwithin biofilters – lysimeter findings\nDr Daniel Green\, Research Associate: Sustainable Drainage\,\nNewcastle University \n14:00 – Effect of different vegetation on evapotranspiration rates and hydraulic\nconductivity within biofilters – column test findings\nDr Simon De-Ville\, Research Associate\, The University of Sheffield \n14:15 – Reflections on bioretention modelling\nDr Simon De-Ville\, Research Associate\, The University of Sheffield \n14:30 – Modelling SuDS with Autodesk InfoDrainage\nDaniel Yardley\, Product Engineer\, Autodesk \n14:45 – Interactive discussion and Q&A \n15:00 – Networking break \n15:30 – Stormwater management metrics: how do we quantify stormwater\nmanagement performance and what should our regulatory targets be?\nProfessor Virginia Stovin\, Professor of Green Infrastructure for\nStormwater Management\, The University of Sheffield \n15:45 – Updates to the CIRIA SuDS Manual\nBridget Woods-Ballard\, Technical Director\, HR Wallingford \n16:00 – – SuDS Design and Implementation – 20 years on\nZac Tudor\, Associate Landscape Architect\, Arup \n16:15 – Severn Trent Water’s Mansfield retrofitting programme\nJohn Brewington\, Regional Development Manager\, Severn Trent Water \n16:30 – Interactive discussion and Q&A \n16:55 – Closing remarks \n17:00 – Networking drinks \n\n\nFees\nsusdrain partners and supporters Free to attend\nCIRIA members Free to attend\nNon-members Free to attendBooking\nPlease sign in or create an account to register online for this event.\nIf you are experiencing issues registering online\, please complete and return the booking form to Susan Richards.\nAlternatively please contact us on 07933 181 765 or email our Customer Services team.\nConfirmation emails will be sent 10 days before the event. \nNotice for new bookings from EU/EEA customers only\nCIRIA is currently unable to directly process your transaction if you are purchasing from the EU/EEA region. SUMMARY:River Water Quality & Storm Overflows - Systems approach to maximise improvement
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by CIWEM\nEvent description\nSewage pollution from storm overflows in sewers has become a headline environmental and social water quality issue. A wide range of factors influence how frequently they spill. And a wide range of actions are needed to reduce that frequency. By looking beyond the obvious\, we can maximise the benefits of actions and make them as cost-effective to deliver as possible. \nAs Defra is consulting on its Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan\, CIWEM is launching the findings of stakeholder research and systems mapping to highlight where action should be taken to get the best outcomes in reducing pollution from storm overflows. \nThis webinar will present why we need to look beyond just water companies to achieve lasting improvements on sewage pollution and set out the findings and recommendations of CIWEM’s work. This consulted a wide range of water professionals\, NGOs and local and national government\, agencies and regulators and involved systems-thinking and mapping specialists from Imperial College London to understand the system of pressures on sewerage infrastructure. \nThe findings set out where additional action – tapping into related areas of activity\, investment and policy – can supplement the measures set out by Government to tackle the issue\, and get more bang for our buck. \nWith speakers from CIWEM\, Imperial College London\, The Rivers Trust and Stantec this 90-minute event will explore what we need to do and who needs to act\, how that can give us not just cleaner\, healthier rivers but greener\, more climate resilient places to live\, how long it might realistically take and how much it might cost. \n  \nPart of the CIWEM Pollution digital series.

SUMMARY:Urban Drainage Group Training Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:How do we design urban drainage to be resilient and manage the risk of exceedance? \nThis year’s CIWEM UDG training day will be held over two days\, 16-17 March. The topic we will be covering is exceedance: as engineers\, environmentalists\, planners and policy makers\, how do we design and adapt our assets to cope with extremes in weather? \nThis challenge is one that needs to tackled in collaboration\, with risk management authorities working with other organisations and stakeholders. It potentially involves those directly impacted\, so that they can help to protect themselves. \nOur packed programme will include CPD-accredited interactive sessions\, technical paper presentations\, panel discussions\, practical sessions and speed networking. \nSpaces are limited and are available on a first come\, first serve basis. Registration will close at midnight on 10th March. \nThe cost to attend both days is £60\, sponsorship packages are available at £900 (including local taxes\, where applicable). \nFor sponsorship enquiries\, please email ciwemevents@syonmedia.com \nFor group bookings\, please email events@ciwem.org

SUMMARY:Vernon Harcourt Lecture - 2022 Flood risk management - a just transition to a climate resilient future
DESCRIPTION:Join us at this year’s Vernon Harcourt lecture\, which will be delivered by Sally Sudworth\, global head of sustainability and climate change at Mott MacDonald. \nAs it stands\, entire economies still revolve around fossil fuels\, with people around the world relying on them for not just their livelihoods but also their way of life. Making the switch to a sustainable way of living won’t happen overnight\, but green infrastructure can play a huge part in creating a cleaner\, greener\, healthier world. \nAs we look forward to COP27 for climate and COP15 for biodiversity\, the debate about whether COP26 was a success continues. We\, as engineers\, are a community of professionals that is uniquely placed to do something positive. This is as exciting and rewarding as it is demanding. \nWe must safeguard the globe’s precious resources\, creating balanced outcomes against the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We have a duty to ensure\, to the best of our ability\, that the infrastructure we deliver for our clients will be resilient to the impacts of climate change from wildfires\, drought\, extremes of temperature (freezing conditions to heat domes) to flooding. But resilience is just part of it\, we also have need to factor in carbon reduction\, making a conscious effort to reduce the amount we are locking in\, both in construction and operation. \nAre we doing enough? Come along\, join the discussion in person\, and better understand your role in making a difference.

SUMMARY:ICE - Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) in Yorkshire\, online
DESCRIPTION:Landscape architects 2B Landscape Consultancy Ltd have extensive experience spanning over 30 years in Landscape Design\, Assessment and Visualisation\, with a special interest in Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). \nSuDS design teams will be familiar with the four pillars of SuDS; quantity\, quality\, amenity and biodiversity\, but often find their clients asking – “but isn’t it going to cost more?” \nWhen 2B was asked to provide a planting plan for an already designed drainage system\, they worked with the quantity surveyor to demonstrate that a landscape-based SuDS scheme would have saved 1.5% on the construction budget\, had landscape architects been involved in time. \nJoin us for this knowledge sharing event to find out how early engagement with landscape architects on drainage design can reduce scheme costs and deliver on the four pillars of SuDS. \nThe webinar will explore how reducing costs can be achieved alongside the four pillars of SuDS by: \nReducing the need for underground tanks and pipework.\nUsing site earthworks to construct the landscaped SuDS.\nAvoiding costs associated with connections by using natural drainage pathways.\nFollowing a recap on good SuDS principles generally\, 2B will walk through the proposed landscaped SuDS Design for the University of Hull student accommodation case study\, including the detail of where cost savings were identified compared to conventional drainage design. \nYorkshire Water will provide a brief overview of the 2020 Sewerage Sector Guidance as it relates to adoptable SuDS\, and detail the types of landscaped SuDS that can be presented for adoption locally.

SUMMARY:Explore Engineering - Winchester Waterways Walk
DESCRIPTION:Winchester\, King Alfred’s capital of Wessex\, is a beautiful cathedral City\, but also has a complicated river system with various interlinked branches of the River Itchen flowing through\, and under the City. \nFollowing serious flooding in 2014 a scheme was built last year to help to manage flooding by control of the river upstream in an and allow flooding in the Nature reserve at Winnall Moors\, a SSSI. \nThe schemes involved creation of a high-risk reservoir in the city centre that is designed not to be an obvious flood defence. \nThe walk will allow you to see the new construction\, but also the nature reserve at Winnall Moors. \nCovid-19 restrictions: we will abide by Government guidance in place at the time of this event or postpone the event to a new date if necessary. Arrangements will be clarified in advance for those people signed up to the event. \nMeet at the Durngate Car-park ( North Walls\, Winchester SO23 8DW) at 15:45 for a 16:00 start and it is about 1 mile around the new works\, but we will also walk around the Nature Reserve and to City Mill\, which as an important part of the scheme making a total of about 4 miles. The scheme was a co-operation between the City Council\, County Council and the Environment Agency. \nThe total length of walk is about 4 miles. The walk is expected to finish about 18:30pm. SUMMARY:The RootSpace Story In Conversation with Dean Bowie. Presented by GreenBlue urban
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\nThey are often asked what is RootSpace and how did it come to market. \nUnsurprising\, it starts with trees. It is difficult to imagine life without them\, they are also complex organisms\, interacting with their surroundings in many ways – the living lungs of the planet. \nThis story (of soil cells) is 20 years young and during this presentation we will share the experiences\, the exciting moments\, the breakthrough events which led to the creation of the most advanced urban tree pit system available. \n  \nLearning outcomes: \n\nLook at the forest floor environment which is where trees do best – healthy uncompacted soil. Compared to the built environment where they are most needed for shade\, water management\, air quality and so many other ecosystem benefits.\nHead back to 1992 when formally known as Greenleaf\, to the present day as innovation continues. Hear an interview with our founder who experienced frustration with high mortality rates of newly planted trees\, who then developed products to aide irrigation and root management to enable tree establishment.\nLook back at successful case studies\, with extracts from clients and designers from across the globe.\n\n\n\nClick here to find out more and register

SUMMARY:Greener workspaces- restoring nature for Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:About the webinar\nThe environmental challenge facing the world has never been greater. Alongside progress towards net zero carbon\, businesses need to find more efficient ways to manage and use resources and to build resilience to the extreme weather brought by climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how we use our workplaces. As a result we need to build back in a way that increases corporate and individual resilience to future global shocks. \nAll employers can create workplaces that maximise green space\, naturally manage rain and surface water and work with nature. During this webinar we will provide an introduction for businesses on: \n\nwhat nature-based solutions and SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) are and the value they can provide for your business from reduced flood risk and energy savings to enhanced biodiversity and employee and community wellbeing.\nhow to introduce nature-based solutions in the environment around your workplace\, from small-scale changes to transformational projects.\nexamples and case studies of nature-based solutions installations of different scales.\n\nYou may also be interested in Business in the Community’s (BITC) Guide to Greening your Workspace toolkit which introduces some of the ways that businesses can use nature-based solutions to improve their resilience\, enhance their environment and improve biodiversity through the installation or enhancement of green and blue spaces in and around their premises. \nClick here to find out more and register

SUMMARY:Gerald Lacey Lecture 2021
DESCRIPTION:Land and Water Management for Food Security: The Broad Picture\nRecent estimates of food demand\, based on median projections of growth\, call for a 50% increase in the global demand figure. Linearly proportional increases in the allocation of land and water resources towards increased food production are not realistic given the trends in competing uses for these resources. Besides\, our natural resource base is already giving alarm signals for increased exploitation. The pandemic also revealed the vulnerabilities in our food value chains. \nThe speaker will discuss the response options available to the policy makers\, based on the most recent figures about the state of the resources and the trends\, and both the need and the opportunities for cooperation across sectoral and disciplinary boundaries. \nClick here to find out more and register.
